Ellen Van Maris, was perhaps the best female bodybuilder that never won a Ms. Olympia contest, she was born in 1958 in Amstelveen, Holland.
Van Maris started competing in Holland in 1982, she competed for two years on the local level. During the two years she placed third at the Randstad Championships, took fifth place at the Grand Prix of Holland, then finished the year strong with two runner-up placings at the Dutch Championships and the European Grand Prix.
After placing thired in the Brussels Grand Prix Van Maris went on to win the Dutch Grand Prix later the same year

1984 turned out to be a big year for Van Maris after she won the Holland Nationals at the age of 26, she went on to Sydney, Australia, where she competed against 12 other hopefuls in the Women's World Ametuers where she won the lightweight class and her IFBB pro card.
After arning her pro card Van Maris went on her mission for the Ms. Olympia title. She entered the 1984 Olympia in Montreal, Canada, where she faced over 20 other women, all fighting for the same title. Unfortunaltly Van Maris placed 9th and Cory Everson won her first of six straight Ms. Olympia titles.

In 1985, Van Maris entered for the first of three straight Ms. Olympia contests. The show was held at Madision Square Garden's Felt Forum in New York, where she faced 14 of her previous Ms. Olympia opponents plus eight other new women. Van Maris placed seventh moving up only two place's from her previous Ms. olympia contest. However, in 1986 Van Maris came back with a vengence taking third place behind the winner Cory Everson and runner up Clare Furr. Van Maris made her best Olympia showing in 1987, beating the likes of Carla Dunlap, Mary Roberts and Marjo Selin. Everson, the entrenched champ, was too much to overcome, and Van Maris had to settle for second.

In 1988 the Ms. olympia contest had a small change of venue, moving to Madison Square Garden's main arena. Van Maris entered again for the third year running and slipped away to fifth place Cory Everson yet again won the contest folloed by Anja Langer, Bev Francis, and Tonya Knight.
In 1989 Van Maris entered in her final bid for the Ms. Olympia brass ring, where she placed fifth again. Cory Everson won again followed by Sandy Ridell, Francis and Jackie Paisley.
During her years Van Maris consistantly made improvements and which made her a serious rival to the six time champion Cory Everson. However, she never won the Ms. olympia title as she had wished, but she had a champions spirit and devotion and has been an inspiration to many female competitors of today.
